The IMF Resident Representative Office for Iraq and Yemen is seeking to hire a highly qualified Economist to join its team, preferably starting on June 1.
The position is offered as a one-year local contractual appointment, with the possibility of renewal for successive terms of up to three years, subject to continued need and satisfactory performance.
The position is based in Amman. Candidates must be nationals or residents of Jordan or be able to independently obtain a valid work permit before starting employment with the Fund to be considered. Proof of nationality, residency, and/or work authorization will be required prior to starting employment. The IMF will not sponsor or assist with obtaining work permits.
Job Summary
The Economist supports the Head of Office and mission team as needed, through (a) performing analytical work, e.g., undertaking economic analysis, evaluating, monitoring, and assessing economic developments, policy and program design, and technical assistance, (b) contacting authorities,(c) monitoring a range of meetings, etc.
Economists respond creatively to address new economic issues and contexts; work with IFIs, bilateral and multilateral donors and other stakeholders and develop and maintain comprehensive databases on aspects of the economy of their assigned country. The level of difficulty and responsibility of the duties assigned, the length of experience, and the level of proficiency of the staff member should be consistent with the grade level assigned. Economists at this level work independently under the general supervision of the Head of Office. The selected candidate is expected to back up others, substituting for the Head of Office and other team members during absences and periods of heavy workload.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Economist undertakes the following duties and responsibilities:
Undertakes systematic monitoring, assessment, and evaluation of economic and related political developments/policies (particularly in the areas of production, prices, financial sector, money, fiscal issues, and the balance of payments) in country of operation. Identifies problems and issues for discussion.
As appropriate, provides IMF staff with complete, accurate, and current information with respect to country surveillance and develops and maintains databases. Responds to other internal requests for information.
Collects/analyzes data and prepares a variety of written and statistical outputs.
Contributes to institutional capacity building; monitors technical assistance provided by the Fund.
Develops and maintains effective relationships/contacts with national technical staff, donor institutions, IFIs, other organizations regarding developments in country of operation.
Assists visiting mission staff with respect to collecting and analyzing economic sector data. Prepares program/background notes for visiting missions.
Participates in missions to collect/analyze data as well as exchange information with Government/Private Sector officials.
Coordinates with COM with respect to the development, implementation, and dissemination of an outreach and communication strategy within the country.
*Note: The list of duties is illustrative of regular and recurring functions; however, the Economist is expected to back up others, substituting for the Head of Office and mission team, as needed. Performs other duties as required and assists in the smooth functioning of the office.

Language Requirements
Fluency in oral and written Arabic and English is required.
